Metal carved panels are widely used in building exteriors, guard booths, and fencing due to their advantages such as thermal insulation, waterproofing, weather resistance, and aesthetically pleasing three-dimensional appearance. However, the quality of installation directly determines its decorative effect and service life. The following outlines key considerations for installation from multiple perspectives.


I. Preparatory work before construction


Substrate preparation is fundamental. The substrate must be flat, dry, and firm, with a flatness error controlled within 2mm/2m. For exterior walls, a bonding agent must be applied in advance; for old walls, hollow layers must be removed and cracks repaired to prevent warping after paneling is installed. The moisture content of the wall surface should not exceed 10%, and uneven areas must be leveled with cement mortar.


Material and tool inspection is crucial. Verify the material type (e.g., 201/304/316L), thickness, and pattern of the carved panels to ensure no color difference or pattern misalignment within the same batch. Use burr-free cutting machines and stainless steel drill bits to avoid scratching the panel surface. All accessories must be stainless steel bolts and neutral silicone weather-resistant sealant; acidic sealants are strictly prohibited as they will corrode the stainless steel passivation film.


The layout planning must be meticulous. The layout should be designed according to the wall dimensions and carved patterns, ensuring continuous pattern splicing and aligning symmetrical patterns with the central axis. When laying large areas, a 3-5mm expansion joint should be reserved to prevent deformation of the boards due to thermal expansion and contraction; the spacing between expansion joints should not exceed 6m.


II. Key Points in the Installation Process


The fixing method varies depending on the scenario. For interior walls, a combination of adhesive and mechanical fixing can be used. A special stone adhesive is applied to the back of the panel, and the edges are fixed with stainless steel self-tapping screws, with a screw spacing of no more than 300mm. For exterior wall dry-hanging, hot-dip galvanized square steel or stainless steel keel should be used, with the keel spacing controlled within 600mm. The panels are fixed to the keel using dry-hanging brackets, and the brackets must be firmly secured to the edges of the panels to prevent wobbling.


The installation sequence of the panels must be standardized. It is recommended to install them one by one from bottom to top, and the first panel of the first row should be leveled with a spirit level. During installation, all panels should have the female end facing down and the male end facing up. Align the female end of the next panel with the male end of the previous panel and insert it firmly downwards. Gently tap the joint with a rubber mallet to ensure a tight connection. After installing every 10 rows of wall panels, a plumb line should be used to check and eliminate any errors in time.


The treatment of inside and outside corners and joints is crucial. For outside corners, a special corner trim strip should be used, covering both ends of the board to ensure straight edges and impact resistance. For inside corners, use inside corner trim strips, conforming to the curve of the wall corner, ensuring a tight seal without any black seams. Board joints should be filled with foam rods and then coated with weather-resistant sealant, ensuring a full, smooth sealant surface with a width controlled between 5-8mm.


III. Precautions during construction

Strict environmental conditions are required. Construction is not advisable when the temperature is below 5℃ or above 40℃, and high-altitude operations must be suspended when the wind force exceeds level 5. Construction is strictly prohibited during the rainy season to avoid rainwater washing away the adhesive and causing the boards to become damp and rust.


Safe operation is of paramount importance. Do not place live electrical appliances or other energized equipment near the boards during construction to avoid danger. Wear safety belts when working at heights and wear safety goggles when cutting boards. Take proper lightning protection measures when connecting the joists and boards; do not use insulating materials for fixing.


Finished product protection must be maintained throughout the entire process. During installation, a protective film should be applied to the surface of the panels to prevent tool scratches and cement mortar contamination of the carved patterns. Heavy objects should not be piled on or stepped on installed panels, especially the perforated areas, to prevent panel deformation and damage to the patterns.


IV. Details of Cutting and Handling


There are specific guidelines for handling and storing boards. When handling boards, they should be upright; do not lift them by either end directly. Lift them to a distance of 1-1.5 meters to prevent breakage. When placing boards, use soft material underneath, and ensure the surface is flat and firm to prevent deformation due to their own weight.


Metal shavings must be cleaned after cutting. When cutting sheet metal, metal shavings will adhere to the surface and cut edges, which are prone to rust. Therefore, the shavings must be carefully wiped away with a cloth after cutting. Dimensions should be marked during cutting, and pieces of the same size should be grouped together for easy reference during construction.


V. Post-treatment and waterproofing sealing


All accessories must be installed completely. After all the carved panels are installed, press the accessory cover firmly onto the base and seal it with waterproof silicone sealant. Waterproof and breathable membranes must be installed at windows, eaves, and other areas, with an overlap width of no less than 10cm, to completely eliminate the risk of water seepage around windows.


When to remove the protective film. To prevent scratches on the surface of the panels during handling, they are covered with a protective film at the factory. The protective film can be removed after installation, leaving the building looking brand new.


In summary, the installation of metal carved panels is a systematic project. From base treatment and keel installation to panel fixing and joint sealing, each step requires strict control. Only by following the standards and paying attention to details can the panels achieve the best decorative effect and service life.
