As a vital component of building envelope structures, metal exterior wall panels feature environmental performance that directly impacts building safety and indoor environmental quality. Standardized environmental testing constitutes a critical procedure to ensure products comply with green building standards, and its workflow generally covers stages including sample preparation, laboratory testing, report compilation, certification and review.
Prior to initiating testing, applicable national standards and industrial specifications for the products shall be identified. Core indicators for environmental testing of metal exterior wall panels include volatile organic compound (VOC) content, limits of heavy metals (such as lead, cadmium and hexavalent chromium), limits of radionuclides, and formaldehyde emission. Subject to product types (e.g., aluminum single panels, color-coated steel panels, steel wall panels), corresponding special standards shall also be referenced, such as Aluminum Single Panels for Building Decoration (GB/T 23443) and Color Coated Steel Sheets and Strips (GB/T 12754).
Testing institutions generally require clients to provide representative samples with dimensions meeting testing requirements (e.g., specimens of no less than 500 mm × 300 mm for coating performance testing). Samples shall be taken from different batches and positions to ensure they truthfully reflect the overall product quality. Samples shall be properly marked with recorded information including production batch, date and storage conditions, and appropriately packed and transported to prevent damage or contamination in transit.
After samples arrive at the laboratory, they shall be conditioned for a certain period under standard environmental conditions (temperature: 23±2°C, humidity: 50%±5%). Corresponding testing methods are then adopted according to testing items:
VOC and formaldehyde testing: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) or climate chamber method is commonly used to determine the emission per unit area.
Heavy metal testing: Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) or X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) is adopted to analyze the content of elements such as lead, cadmium and mercury in coatings.
Radioactivity testing: The internal exposure index and external exposure index are determined in accordance with GB 6566.
Coating adhesion and weather resistance: The durability and environmental performance consistency of coatings are evaluated via cross-cut test, salt spray test, artificial accelerated aging test and other methods.
Upon completion of testing, the laboratory conducts statistical analysis of data and compiles official test reports. Reports must cover testing items, test methods, applicable standards, results and conclusions, and bear the seals of CMA (China Metrology Accreditation) or CNAS (China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment). Reports shall be reviewed by authorized examiners to guarantee accurate and complete data before release to clients.
If products are intended to be included in government green procurement catalogues or applied for green building projects, enterprises may further apply for green building material product certification. The certification process includes: enterprises submitting application documents, third-party institutions conducting on-site audits on factory production conditions and environmental management systems, sampling products for laboratory testing, and issuing certification certificates upon comprehensive assessment. Certificates are generally valid for 5 years, and annual surveillance inspections are required during the validity period.
Environmental performance testing of metal exterior wall panels follows a complete workflow: confirm standards first → scientific sampling → standardized testing → authoritative reports → optional certification. Systematic testing and certification can effectively guarantee that the environmental performance of products meets national requirements, providing reliable material support for green buildings.
